Are You Being Selfish or Practicing Self-care?

Okay, ladies, I think we have all felt at some point putting our own needs first is wrong. If we put our needs first then we are being selfish. Instead of feeling like shit, we take care of everyone else but ourselves. Let’s be honest, no one wants to be labeled as being selfish especially when you aren’t. I feel like society has forced us to feel as women putting ourselves first is a no go. We need to be a wife, a mother, a daughter first before we can be or do what we want.

This is so much bullshit and we all need to stop. Self-care is the most important thing you should be doing in your life.

Definition of Self Care and Selfish

First off let’s start with the definitions of self-care and selfish. Per Webster’s dictionary:

Self-care:  The care for oneself without the consultation of a medical professional.

Selfish: concerned excessively or exclusively with oneself: seeking or concentrating on one’s own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others.

See the difference.

When you are selfish you only care about yourself and no one else. When you are doing self-care you are just trying to take care of yourself. A lot of us believe we are being selfish if we practice self-care, which is so far from the truth. Having a self-care routine is so important not only for your mental health, but your physical health as well. Check out my post for my self care tips and your free self-care worksheet!!

Screw the old beliefs

Since now you know the difference between the two, it’s time to get rid of your old beliefs when it comes to self-care. It’s time to stop feeling bad about wanting to take care of yourself.

Let’s put it this way, if you do not take care of yourself – how are you going to take care of others around you? Ever think of that.

If your tank is always being drained and you never refill it, how are going to keep driving? You’re not.

You are going to get burned out and oh yea start being resentful that all you do it take care of others, but no one is taking care of you.

Stop waiting for someone to take care of you. Yes, I said it and I”ll say it again – stop.waiting.for.someone.to.take.care.of.you.

Learn to start to putting yourself first. No one and I mean no one will care for you the way you care for yourself.

Starting a Self-Care Routine

When people think they need to start a self-care routine, they think it’s all about massages and mani/pedi’s. Which don’t get me wrong they are amazeballs, but they aren’t the end all be all to this whole self-care game.

Self-care for me is doing anything that helps you recenter and rejuvenate yourself, so you can continue being at your highest vibration. Basically, do something that makes you happy.

Practicing self-care can be as simple as going for a daily walk, meditating or reading a good book. You decide how big or small the activity can be.

I want you to write down at least three activities that make you happy. To help you do this, I put together a self-care guide to help you along the way.

Once you have this list, start practicing it! It can be a weekly or daily practice depending on what you need.

But don’t stop there. Keep adding to it! Find new activities that make you happy – start going to yoga, find a free class at the local library or even just find a new place to go for a walk.

Just start taking care of yourself so you can be happy and healthy – inside and out.

So, are you ready to start your self-care routine?
